Black Lion Audio PM 8 MK1 eladó. What makes this product rather unique is that it gives you three different output options: A passive output, where you would have to add your own makeup gain; an electronically balanced output and a transformer balanced output. The two latter outputs are passed through a makeup gain circuit in the unit controlled by the master volume controls on the front panel. Also unusual for a summing unit in this price range are the individual pan pots, signal attenuation pots and mutes on each channel. The Black Lion PM8 is built in the chassis of the SM Pro Audio PM8 (hence the naming convention) however the similarities end there. Black Lion use their own circuit boards and power supply as well as transformer balancing all of the inputs which is not done on the SM version In Use: The unit is very simple to use. 8 XLR inputs feed the 8 channels in the summing matrix. three sets of 2 XLR outputs feed the passive, Electronically balanced and transformer balanced stereo outs (all of which are active all the time). The Pan, attenuation and mute controls on each channel give you the option to place mono signals within the stereo field or pair channels for stereo stems by hard panning L&R Overall the unit adds a nice character to the sound. The transformer balanced outs can add a nice little grit to the low end while the electronically balanced outs give the sound a nice sheen. The passive output opens a whole world of possibilities if you have a stereo makeup gain solution with a particular character you want to add to the sound. The pan pots allow you to mix stereo and mono sources into the sum with ease and the results have a nice warm feel to them. The unit is set up with 10 kOhms impedance per channel so you need to keep things to around line level. There is plenty of headroom for transients but, surprisingly, less than on the original SM Pro Audio version of the PM 8 and on many other summing boxes out there. A few little niggling complaints: 1) no way to monitor the sum you are sending back to the DAW, no headphone outs. 2) the pan pots are not indented for center position and 12 o`clock does not always give you a dead center. I found center varied from 11 o`clock to 1 o`clock on some of the channels 3) Noise. The unit does seem to pick up RFI noise from power supplies (including it`s own). I had to move any external transformer/wall wart power supplies as far as possible away from the unit to keep hum down. I also found each channel slighly noisier as I got closer to the units own power supply. Channel one was the quietest since it was farthest away from the internal power supply, Channel 8 was significantly more succeptable to noise as it was the closest to the internal power supply 4) uneven volumes when using a stereo pair. I found if I sent a stereo stem to a pair of inputs it could come out as very slightly off center (depending on the inputs I chose). so for example if sending to stereo pair to inputs one and two I would leave channel one on the unit unattenuated but would have to pull the volume down slightly on channel two to recenter the stereo image 5) scratchy pots: Both the master output makeup gain controls were scratchy on my unit (purchased new). Some Deoxit helped but really should have been taken care of by the manufacturer IMO. Makes me wonder about QA now that BLA is pumping out so much new gear. Overall not a bad entry device into the world of external summing however there are a few little issues that add up to make the device less than perfect and depending on what you have going on with other electronic devices, the noise can add up
